How to change a floor, step by step

  1. Pick the material for the room

Tile or LVP for kitchens, baths and entries. LVP or laminate for bedrooms. In St. George heat and dust, tile and LVP are the easiest to keep clean.

  2. Measure the square footage

Length times width for each room, plus 10 percent extra for cuts and pattern waste.

  3. Remove the old floor

Carpet, pad and tack strip come out. Old tile is chipped off and the slab is cleaned.

  4. Prepare the subfloor

This is the step most people skip. High spots are ground down and low spots are filled, so planks do not flex and tile does not crack.

  5. Install and finish

The floor goes in, then baseboards, transitions and quarter round are installed and the room is cleaned.

Flooring Installation questions

Is LVP or tile better for St. George homes?

Both work well. Tile lasts longer and handles heat and water best. LVP is warmer underfoot, quieter and costs less to install.

Can you install new flooring over old tile?

Sometimes LVP can go over flat, solid tile, but in most cases we remove it so the new floor sits at the right height and stays flat.

How long does flooring installation take?

A typical 1,000 square foot area takes about 2 to 5 days, depending on removal and subfloor prep.

Do you move furniture?

We can move standard furniture. Let us know about pianos, safes or large electronics before the job.
